What is Spiritism?
Spiritism is a philosophical, scientific, and religious doctrine founded by Allan Kardec in the 19th century, based on the study and understanding of spiritual reality. The doctrine seeks to explain the origin, nature, and destiny of spirits, as well as the laws governing the spiritual world. According to Spiritism, human beings are composed of a physical body and a spirit, with the spirit being immortal and undergoing a continuous process of evolution through reincarnation.
Spiritism does not impose dogmas, but encourages reflection, experimentation, and the practice of the moral principles of Jesus' teachings, aiming for inner transformation, spiritual improvement, and the development of virtues such as love, charity, forgiveness, and fraternity.
Origin and Evolution
Spiritism began in the 19th century with Allan Kardec, the pen name of Hyppolyte Léon Denizard Rivail, a respected French educator with a strong background in science, philosophy, and literature. Known for his logical and methodical thinking, Kardec studied spiritual phenomena and organized the teachings he received from spirits into a structured doctrine.
In 1857, he published The Book of Spirits, marking the official start of Spiritism. His scientific approach and credibility helped the doctrine gain recognition. Kardec later expanded the teachings through works like The Mediums’ Book, The Gospel According to Spiritism, and Genesis. Over time, Spiritism spread across the world, influencing thought in science, philosophy, and religion.

-
Mediumship – Communication between physical and spiritual worlds fosters understanding.
The Spiritist Movement Worldwide
The Spiritist movement began in France in the 19th century and quickly spread to other countries, with particular significance in Brazil, where Spiritism became one of the leading philosophical and religious currents. In Brazil, the Spiritist movement consolidated with the contributions of great mediums and thinkers, such as Chico Xavier, Divaldo Pereira Franco, and others, who helped expand the doctrine through books, lectures, and charitable work..
Today, Spiritism is practiced in many countries around the world, such as France, Portugal, Spain, the United States, and Latin America, with a significant presence in Brazil. The Spiritist movement continues to expand, with millions of followers seeking, through study, practice, and understanding of Spiritist principles, to promote peace, well-being, and moral and spiritual evolution.
